Journalist Rodrigo Chagas hosts our weekly English-language show featuring the latest news and fun facts about Brazil - Screen capture/Brasil de Fato

This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil’s first edition of the year, we look back at 2020, a year marked by tragedy for the entire world. Brazil is one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and the lackluster response by the Bolsonaro government only made things worse. While the country still has no vaccination program in place, other nations are well underway in vaccinating their populations.

Furthermore, the economic crisis which hit the entire planet due to the pandemic, has affected Brazilians, especially the poor, in unimaginable ways. With no end in sight for the current turmoil, Brazil's future looks grim in 2021.

Fortunately, during trying times we often see the best in people, and the initiatives of solidarity spearheaded by the Rural Landless Workers Movement helped countless Brazilians get by during this period. Food distribution, assistance for small farmers and the production of organic foods are just some of the actions being taken by the MST, in order to help those most in need.

In this edition of our show, we’ll look back at some of the most striking images from last year, as well as showcase some quality Brazilian music, as is tradition on our show.

All What's Happening in Brazil episodes are available at Brasil de Fato's YouTube channel, where you'll also find a special English-content playlist.
