Linguist, political scientist and philosopher Noam Chomsky, 95, was discharged from the Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital in São Paulo on Tuesday (18). Earlier in the day, rumors about the intellectual's death spread in the press and on social media.

Chomsky suffered a massive stroke a year ago and was hospitalized in Brazil, where he is expected to continue his medical treatment at home. The left-wing thinker adopted the country as a second home in 2015, after marrying Brazilian linguist Valeria Wasserman.

Considered the founder of modern linguistics, Chomsky has published over 100 books and identifies as a libertarian socialist. He is an emeritus professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he taught for more than 40 years. His combative political and intellectual work has influenced the left all over the world.
