Cuba has officially applied to join the BRICS group as a partner country. The information was given by the Director General of Bilateral Relations to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Pereira, on Tuesday (8).

According to the diplomat, the BRICS group has been consolidating itself as a key player in global geopolitics and as a “hope for the countries of the South.”

“Cuba officially requested to join the BRICS as a 'partner country' in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who holds the presidency of the group, which is establishing itself as a key player in global geopolitics and a beacon of hope for the countries of the South,” said Pereira in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The BRICS group was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Since January 1, 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates have joined the association. In 2024, Russia will chair the bloc.

This year's BRICS+ summit is also chaired by Russia and will be held between October 22 and 24 in Kazan city. The Russian ambassador to Cuba, Victor Coronelli, said earlier that Moscow hopes to see a delegation from Cuba at the BRICS summit, considering that the country's president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has received an invitation from Putin.

On September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that 34 States had already reported their desire to join BRICS activities “by any form.”
