The Federal Police on Friday morning (Jul. 18) served two search-and-seizure warrants at addresses linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro.
He was taken to the State Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration to be fitted with an electronic ankle tag.
Under the decision, Bolsonaro, as well as having to wear an electronic ankle tag, is banned from using social media. He will have to stay at home from 7 pm to 6 am and is prohibited from communicating with other individuals facing trial before the Supreme Court or with ambassadors and diplomats from other countries. In addition, he will not be able to leave the federal capital, Brasília, where the seat of government is located.
The former president already had his passport seized, in February 2024.
Defense
In a statement, the ex-president’s defense said it was “surprised and outraged by the imposition of severe precautionary measures against him, who until now has always complied with all the orders of the Judiciary. The defense will respond in due course, after becoming familiar with the court’s decision.”
The Liberal Party, of which Bolsonaro is a member, also issued a statement expressing “surprise and repudiation” at the operation. The note, signed by party head Valdemar Costa Neto, says Jair Bolsonaro “has always been at the disposal of the authorities.”
The operation was launched in a short note by the federal police on Friday (Jul. 18) to carry out “two search-and-seizure warrants, as well as precautionary measures other than imprisonment, in compliance with the decision of the Supreme Court.”
