Israeli shelling in the south of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, resulted in the tragic death of Brazilian citizen Fatima Abbas last Saturday (2). The Brazilian baby was one year old, as confirmed on Monday (4) by the Itamaraty, Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The Brazilian government learned, with great regret and dismay, of the death of one-year-old Brazilian baby Fatima Abbas in Beirut, a victim of an Israeli attack on November 2 in the suburb of Hadeth, south of the Lebanese capital," stated the Ministry.

The note continues: "The conflict in Lebanon has already resulted in the confirmed deaths of three Brazilians, all minors and all victims of Israeli attacks."

In expressing its heartfelt condolences to Fatima Abbas' family and extending its full solidarity, the Brazilian government "reiterates its condemnation, in the strongest terms, of the continued and unjustified Israeli air strikes against civilian areas in Lebanon and renews its appeal to the parties involved to cease hostilities immediately."

The other Brazilians killed by Israel in Lebanon were Ali Kamal Abdallah, 15, from Foz do Iguaçu in Paraná, and Mirna Raef Nassef, 16, from Balneário Camboriú in Santa Catarina.

Israel's bombardment of Lebanon has caused 2,980 deaths since the attacks began on September 23, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health. The numbers could be even higher because of the bodies that have not yet been recovered or identified.
