It is generally assumed that Carnival in Brazil is mostly just a big party. However, as Mike Fox reports from Brazil, it actually has its origins in politically motivated concerns and this is true now more than ever.

The Real News, a Brasil de Fato partner, reports on Carnival groups that brought political topics to the forefront, including the political imprisonment of Brazil's ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the assassination of councilwoman and black activist Marielle Franco, and the scandals facing the Jair Bolsonaro government.
