This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we delve into the country’s struggle against the coronavirus. The Jair Bolsonaro government, which since early on downplayed the severity of the disease, has now presided over the deaths of more than 150.000 Brazilians in just 7 months. With the total number of cases now over 5 million, Brazil is having a hard time dealing with reopening its economy and society.
In our Story of the Week, we analyse black representation in politics. In a country where over half the population identifies as black, how is it that so few participate in the country’s politics? The upcoming mayoral contests for the nation’s 26 state capitals are proof and parcel of this issue, with black candidates even going as far as identifying as white at the ballot box in order to secure party funding.
Our Culture Talk segment takes a look at how indigenous people are putting their lives at risk while combating the worst wildfires in the country’s history. In an address to United Nations general assembly, Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro blamed these very natives for setting the wildfires that are destroying their very own homes. Obviously a false claim, the truth is that most of these fires are set by illegal loggers and land grabbers who are after the riches contained in the country’s ecosystems.
Finally, as is tradition on our show, we wrap things up with Brazilianism, the segment where you get to hear some Brazilian music and learn a delicious local recipe.
