Journalist Pamela Oliveira hosts our weekly English-language show featuring the latest news and fun facts about Brazil - Screen capture/Brasil de Fato

This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we continue to bring you the latest news about the coronavirus outbreak in the country, as well as how the authorities are handling the situation. In this time of crisis, social movements continue to expand their networks of solidarity, and provide assistance to the most vulnerable sectors of the population.

Also on our show, learn about the 1996 Carajás massacre, which happened in the state of Pará, and saw 21 farmers brutally murdered by the military police. April 17th marks the 24th anniversary of the incident and unfortunately, things only seem to be getting worse for the poor rural residents of Brazil, under the right wing rule of Jair Bolsonaro.

In our Culture Talk segment, meet Xênia França, a modern artist with ancient, cosmic vibes. Hailing from the state of Bahia in Brazil’s northeast, the singer made a name for herself in the eclectic music scene of São Paulo, the country’s largest city. We spoke to Xênia to find out more about her music, and how her life story and African heritage define her art.

Finally, as is tradition on the show, in our Brazilianism segment we showcase a delicious local recipe, for you to enjoy a little taste of Brazil.

All What's Happening in Brazil  episodes are available at Brasil de Fato’s YouTube channel, where you'll also find a special English-content playlist.
