Journalist José Bernardes hosts our weekly English-language show featuring the latest news and fun facts about Brazil - Screen capture/Brasil de Fato

This week in What’s Happening in Brazil, we take a look at how the country became the second worst affected in the world by the Covid-19 pandemic. The country has unfortunately reached the grim milestone of 100,000 deaths from the illness, and is now facing its worst health crisis ever, as well as one of the worst economic downturns in its history. Find out how this all happened and why the situation is not improving.

In our Culture Talk segment you get to meet one of Brazil’s most notorious singers and songwriter. Hailing from the state of Maranhão, Joãozinho Ribeiro uses his art as a form of political resistance. In an exclusive interview with Brasil de Fato, the artist speaks of his 40 year long career as well as about the current political climate.

Our Story of the Week delves into the destruction of the cerrado, one of Brazil’s most important ecosystems, and home to indigenous and other traditionalist communities. The devastation it faces surpasses that of the Amazon rain forest, and the area struggles even more due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lastly in our Brazilianism segment, you meet another artist from the state of Maranhão and learn how to make a delicious local dish.
