China has announced its support for Venezuela’s request to convene an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council amid escalating attacks by the United States against Caracas. The position was stated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday (18).

“China opposes all acts of unilateral intimidation and supports all countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and national dignity,” Guo said, stressing that Venezuela has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries. According to the spokesperson, the international community understands and supports Venezuela’s stance in defending its legitimate rights and interests.

In recent months, the United States has expanded its military presence in the Caribbean, deploying warships, destroyers, and Marine units. Caracas argues that these operations represent an escalation of aggression against national sovereignty and pose a threat to regional stability.

Strategic partnership

On Wednesday (17), Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil held a phone call with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during which he conveyed a message from Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the conversation, Gil stated: “We reaffirmed the brotherhood between our peoples and governments, as well as the all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership that unites Venezuela and China, as the foundation for continuing to strengthen bilateral cooperation.”

The Venezuelan foreign minister added that the two sides carried out a joint assessment of the threats and aggressions against Venezuela and the risks facing Latin America and the Caribbean. In his remarks, Gil underscored that China expressed solidarity and firm support for Venezuela in defending its sovereignty, independence, and stability, as well as its backing for regional unity and respect for international law.

Wang Yi reaffirmed that Beijing opposes all forms of unilateral intimidation and that China’s support extends to multilateral forums, including the UN Security Council, reinforcing Caracas’ diplomatic position.

Finally, both foreign ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to further deepen bilateral relations for the benefit of the Venezuelan and Chinese peoples.

Venezuela seeks international debate

The Venezuelan government maintains that an emergency meeting of the Security Council is essential to denounce unilateral pressure and hostile actions by the United States that threaten the country’s sovereignty. According to an official statement from the Foreign Ministry, the goal is to create space for the international community to understand the seriousness of the situation and to strengthen mechanisms for dialogue and mediation.

China’s support during the phone call between the foreign ministers, along with Wang Yi’s public reaffirmation that Beijing opposes “unilateral intimidation,” is viewed by Caracas as a significant diplomatic boost, particularly amid growing international calls for dialogue and restraint.
