Brazilian Congress and Jair Bolsonaro enacted a law that will allow new deforestation acts, land occupations in Environmental Protection Areas and facilitate land grabbing. From now on, the municipal councils of the 5,568 Brazilian cities will have autonomy, with some restrictions, to define which area will be preserved in the riparian forests, whose deforestation increases the risks of floods, landslides and compromises the health of water bodies.

“Nowadays, we have an intense pressure from the real estate sector that wants to pass it to the municipality, because there the real state sector has a bigger capacity to lobby or put the city council and city hall under pressure”, says Nilto Tatto, a congressman from the Workers Party.

Also on this week show: verse, rhyme, and prayer: these are the tools that the repentistas use to tell stories. Repente, also known as cantoria, was recognised as brazil’s cultural heritage by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute at the end of 2021.
